Platinum 'sponge' taken from airport 23rd May 2007
It has been reported that a platinum 'sponge' has been stolen from a cargo warehouse at Philadelphia International Airport.
The Jewelers Security Alliance (JSA) has reported that law enforcement authorities are calling on the industry to be aware of the theft of the 240-pound porous mass of metallic particles, largely made up of pure platinum.
It is understood the 'sponge', which is brown/grey in colour, was stolen from the airport on or about April 30th.
Jewellers are being advised that if they are approached by anyone attempting to sell them this material, they should get in touch with police immediately. Delta Airlines has offered a reward for the return of the 'sponge'.
According to JSA, a jeweller in Philadelphia was recently approached by two black males who sold him a small quantity of platinum 'sponge'.
