Hollywood star Scarlet Johansson has been given a platinum and diamond ring as part of a Valentine's Day surprise.

The actress was seen being given the platinum ring by boyfriend Josh Hartnett, reports US entertainment magazine In Touch Weekly.

He decided to present the jewellery at the prestigious LA restaurant L'Orangerie – alongside a $1,000 bottle of champagne.

However, an unnamed source confirmed that the ring is not a sign that the couple are planning to tie the knot – despite the growing popularity of platinum engagement rings.

Earlier this year platinum was again a celebrity favourite when Hollywood stars at the Golden Globes awards showed off a range of pieces.

Keira Knightly stepped out in full Cartier, including a stunning diamond hair clasp, while fellow English beauty Rachel Weisz accepted her best supporting actress award also wearing platinum from Cartier.
