Platinum mining companies are looking on with interest as Zimbabwe looks to seize control of all private firms in the country.

Paul Mangwana, the minister responsible for the programme, has stated that any new investments in the country must be 51 per cent controlled by indigenous Zimbabweans, in a move that many fear could drive investment out of the country.

Impala Platinum's subsidiary, Zimplats, is the major Zimbabwean platinum miner, but there are concerns that many other potential investors will not want to invest their operations in the country because of the requirement for public control of any venture.

However, independent economist John Robertson told the Daily Telegraph that investment in Zimbabwe's platinum sector may be the only area of the country's industry to see any investment from outside because the reserves of platinum are so rich.
