Platinum miners honoured for green activities 6th October 2006

Two platinum miners have been rewarded for their efforts to take a lead on environmentally-friendly mining processes.

Nedbank Capital Green Mining awards have honoured Anglo Platinum and Palabora for their work in contributing to responsible mining in South Africa.

Anglo Platinum's Isibonelo Wetlands project and its sustainability programme were awarded the environmental and sustainability prizes at the event, demonstrating the company's lead in the field of green mining.

The Isibonelo Wetlands scheme was highlighted by Nedbank Capital's judges as an innovative project which has gone well beyond anything required of it by the South African laws and demonstrates a commitment to improving the environment around its mines.

Palabora won the socioeconomic category for the establishment of its Palabora trust.

Nedbank Capital explained: “While the concept of mines forming trusts to benefit communities that surround them is not unique, Palabora's win demonstrates a clear intent to continuously 'push the boundaries' to ensure the benefits are sustained way beyond the life of the mine."
