Platinum miners discuss safety 16th October 2007

South Africa's platinum mining community is meeting today to discuss a range of issues, including how to improve safety standards and their environmental credentials.

The Bench Marks Foundation Southern Africa (BeFSA) has invited a number of platinum producers working in the region to discuss the issues surrounding conditions at mines and how to work to deliver improvements in the health and safety of workers in particular.

It is hoped the move will help to provide new solutions to difficult problems surrounding the safety of mineworkers. Safety issues have had a major impact on the platinum sector recently.

BeFSA Chief Executive, John Capel, is confident that the conference will prove successful and help the miners to boost their positions.

He said: "The response to our invitation from the mines, has, generally speaking, been positive and we are looking forward to a productive meeting on Tuesday."

The BeFSA is a non-governmental body that seeks to deliver leadership on the benchmarking of good corporate governance, ethical and socially responsible investment.
