Platinum maybe used in breast cancer treatment 8th August 2003

Research is suggesting that platinum compounds, especially when used with other agents, can be used in the treatment of breast cancer.

Scientists at the International Breast Cancer Congress hasve suggested that the treatment could soon be used routinely in approaches to the condition.

Platinum compounds have only recently played a significant part in breast cancer treatment, but research suggests that appropriate use of platinum compounds can result in 'exceptional response rates' within safe toxicity parameters.

The research shows that platinum compounds work synergistically with other agents often used in breast cancer, and has also demonstrated better ways to dose platinum compounds.

Dr. Joyce O'Shaugnessy told the Congress that platinum compounds will soon be moved to the adjuvant setting for the treatment of breast cancer.
