Platinum makes its presence felt at Cannes 17th May 2005

As Cannes is awash with celebrities and film fans, the top names attending have been adding even more glitter to the event with a range of exclusive jewellery, with platinum among the more prominent precious metals on show.

This is the 58th edition of the international film festival, with experts reporting a penchant for multi-coloured diamonds, vintage platinum pieces and feminine items.

Muriel Grehan, spokeswoman for the festival's official partner Chopard, told AFP that the new trend is for "very fine and feminine jewellery".

It is a trend corroborated by Raja Ofera, who heads up Cartier's store in Cannes, who says that "vintage is the new big look" - with platinum experts Chopard reportedly bringing over 400 ranges to the film hub.

A stunning platinum piece worn by Italian actress Monica Bellucci was one example of the new trend, as she donned Cartier's signature panther collection.

The one-off piece she chose featured an onyx and platinum panther head pendant and is valued at €110,000.

Mr Ofera described the pendant as "high-class jewellery but not difficult to wear".

Platinum has become an increasingly familiar fixture in the film world in recent years, with the exclusive metal being championed at Oscar ceremonies, the Golden Globe Awards and innumerable film premieres.

Popular designers such as Neill Lane now use the ceremonies as a means to showcase the latest trends and to highlight extravagant new bespoke designs.track
