Platinum makes in-roads on bridal market 19th August 2005
Platinum is increasingly becoming the metal of choice for couples buying their wedding rings.
Despite the added expense of precious metals such as platinum, more people are now choosing the metal for their wedding rings.
A survey in the USA by WeddingChannel.com found that over a quarter (29 per cent) of brides choose platinum settings for their wedding rings.
Joseph Licata, who owns a chain of jewellery stores in Toledo and Sylvania, Ohio, commented: "The trend has been on the move for about the last five years."
He suggests that the surge in interest has come as the result of a major advertising campaign from the platinum industry, which he believes has had a big effect on boosting the metal's popularity.
And while platinum is often more expensive than gold, it is becoming a firm favourite with engaged couples, not least because of its durability.
The strength of the platinum market among couples was seen earlier this month, when Whitefacet.com launched the Solitaire Diamond Engagement Rings line.
