Platinum lure used in world's richest fishing contest 4th August 2006
A fishing lure containing platinum with a value of around $1 million is to be used at the world's richest fishing tournament in Mexico.
Mac McBurney plans to use the lure, used to attract fish to bite a fishing line, during the Bisbee's Black and Blue marlin tournament this autumn.
As well as featuring over three pounds of platinum, 14-carat and 18-carat gold, the tiny piece of equipment is also encrusted with over 7,000 diamonds and rubies.
Mr McBurney, who is jewellery designer, styled the lure on the model that won last year's Bisbee's Black and Blue contest.
"The Million Dollar Lure came to me after I was going to make a million-dollar tackle box, then realized that that was going to be too much work. So I decided to build just one lure for $1 million. No one had ever done it," Mr McBurney told the Providence Journal.
According to the newspaper, women are beginning to wear the flies as earrings and the lures as pendants on fine chains.
