A new medical database that has been set up to reduce research and development costs for the creation of new drugs has been established, with platinum as one of the searchable elements.

Platinum is becoming an increasingly important element in the medical sector, particularly for use in drugs that help with cancer therapy.

"The real benefits for device manufacturers come from rapid access to authoritative sources of engineering data, biological response knowledge, information about specific cardiovascular devices and FDA approvals information - in a single integrated and cross-linked source," explained David Cebon, Managing Director of Granta Design, which developed the database in conjunction with ASM International.

Users will be able to access data about platinum's mechanical, physical, and biological response properties, as well as compare these details with other materials.

The database also contains information related to materials suppliers so that designers can quickly and efficiently source the materials they want.

It is hoped that the database will provide a compendium of materials information for medical developers to access and reference quickly and easily.
