Platinum helps to keep contact lenses hygienic 15th December 2003

A new formulation of contact lens solution relies on the presence of platinum to ensure that the lenses remain clean and safe for the human eye.

Developed by AOSEPT Clear Care, the solution is a composition of hydrogen peroxide, which is used in conjunction with a piece of platinum fitted in the contact lens holder to ensure good hygiene.

Mary Mowrey-McKee, a group leader of toxicology and microbiology for CIBA Vision, says that the presence of platinum causes hydroxyl radicals to form.

These radicals then break the hydrogen bonds, thus freeing the dirt from the soft contact lens.

In addition the process breaks down micro-organisms such as yeast and fungal spores.

Ensuring that the lens is clean is vital for protecting vision and preventing infections, with the process already becoming widely used by some manufacturers.
