Platinum group metal exploration roundup for January 2008 31st January 2008

Nkwe Platinum has announced that its latest drilling results at its Eerste Geluk and Nooitverwacht farms had exceeded its expectations. The junior mining company said that the results of the drilling "pleasantly surprised" the board, with high-grade results on the UG2 reef averaging 7.34 grams per tonne over platinum group metals (pgms) plus gold. In an announcement to the ASX, Nkwe Platinum said: "The results really do create a platform for the company." The two sites are located on South Africa's Bushveld Complex.

Platinum Australia has had further good results at its Kalahari project, the mining company has announced. Its latest drilling results revealed wide zones containing good grade mineralisation at the Kalahari site. Furthermore, Platinum Australia is also planning a further programme of drilling to the east of Sirius in early 2008, to test for potential extensions of mineralization in this region.

In Canada, Magma Metals announced in January the discovery of a pgms zone at its Thunder Bay North project. The organisation has found intersections of 4.6 metres at 5.01 grams per tonne pgms at the site, as well as finds of nickel and copper. Magma Metals stated that the find could mean a new prospective trend that could be 800 metres long and may be linked to the mineralised peridotite bodies at Current Lake and Beaver Lake. As a result, the mining firm is going to launch follow-up drilling to confirm this potential.

As many as 11 companies have applied to take part in an auction for the exploration of platinum, nickel and copper that was discovered in the Irkutsk region with 750 tonnes of platinum group metals (pgms) expected to be found at the deposit. According to the RBC Daily newspaper, the auction is to take place on March 13th 2008.

Platinum and palladium has been found during the drilling on the Turnagain Project run by Hard Creek Nickel. Platinum and palladium has been found in four separate areas and is becoming "important in the development" of the project, Mark Jarvis, President of the company told marketwire.com.

Jubilee Platinum has confirmed the continuity of platinum group element (pge) mineralisation at the Tjate Project in South Africa's Bushveld Complex. According to hemscott.com, the firm believes that pge mineralisation underlies the entire 5,000 plus hectare area. It could hold up to 65 million ounces pge as well as gold in situ, Colin Bird, Chief Executive of the company claimed.

Gravity West Mining has announced the results of drilling on its Volatire Lake property north of Ontario and in one area found 1.0 metre of 1.2 grams per tonne of palladium. Finding disseminated sulphides with a high palladium and platinum ratio suggests that there could be a relationship between mineralisationat Voltaire Lake and the Las des Iles mine of North American Palladium. One hole showed similarities to the breccia zones that contain palladium at Lac des Iles.

Platinum Group Metals has announced changes to the mine design at its Bushveld Joint Venture platinum projects in South Africa. Continued engineering work will be on maximising early production of platinum group metals (pgm) using decline ramp access and mechanised equipment. A target of about 250,000 oz of platinum, palladium, rhodium and gold has been set. Eskom, the South African power provider, indicated that 2MW of power would be provided for mining projects to focus on maximising the value of shallow platinum ounces which require less powerful operations.

Platinum Australia has announced positive results from drilling tests in their Kalahari Platinum project in South Africa. One of the holes, which is due to be deepened to 32.17 metres, returned 5.86 grammes a tonne of platinum, palladium and gold. Platinum Australia believes there is significant scope to increase the size of the resource. Managing Director, John Lewis, said further deposits in the Orion hole were "particularly significant".
