Platinum display adds sparkle to Japanese festival 4th July 2006
A jeweller in Japan is displaying bamboo branches featuring hundreds of platinum strips, in celebration of a traditional Japanese festival.
Tokyo-based jeweller Tanaka Kikinzoku Jewelry has created the platinum-clad branches to mark the Tanabata star festival, according to the Japan Times.
The platinum strips were used as "tanzaku", usually made from coloured paper, on which people traditionally write down their wishes.
Shoppers at the company's head store in Ginza will be able to see the branches, which will also be displayed at some regional stores.
Tatsuya Katayama, the shop manager of the Ginza Tanaka Fukuoka Tenjin branch, told the Japan Times: "We adopted platinum, said to symbolise eternity, hoping wishes that come true will last forever."
The platinum bamboo branches will be on display until July 7th when, according to the legend, two stars representing separated lovers are finally allowed to meet.
Jewellery store Tiffany recently opened two new stores in Japan.
The New York company, renowned for its 95 per cent pure platinum diamonds and jewels, opened outlets in Yonago and Mito in March.
