A new platinum-coated micro-fluidic chip has been launched by leading designer Dolomite, it was confirmed this week.

The Y-Junction Chip, which has ultra-smooth channel surfaces for uninterrupted flow, is able to facilitate the liquid-to-liquid contact of fluid streams which cannot be mixed.

In addition, it will aid studies into the diffusion of molecules between parallel laminar flow streams, while its versatility makes it ideal for a number of different fluids.

"A wide temperature and pressure range in combination with excellent chemical compatibility enable a broad range of fluids to be used," notes Dolomite.

"Furthermore, excellent spectral transmission facilitates high visibility, making access with microscopy systems quick and easy."

The chip measures 22.5mm by 15mm and can be customised to different depths and channel lay-outs, depending on the specifications required by the user.

Choice of coating is also crucial - as the channel wall surface affects the fluid - and gold, hydrophilic and hydrophobic versions are available, in addition to the platinum offering.

In 2006, Dolomite received £2 million worth of funding from the UK Department of Trade and Industry's Micro and Nano Technology Manufacturing Initiative.
