Platinum City to provide mining education 16th November 2007

A new Platinum City being developed at Rustenburg will focus on providing an education to visitors about the platinum mining industry.

The new park will be a mining educational and entertainment theme park designed to bring the platinum mining sector to life for visitors.

It will include a museum and a three-dimensional 'edutainment' museum, as well as a simulated mine experience, shopping centre and hotel.

Combining education with entertainment, the focus of the new theme park will be the mining and technology sectors.

Commenting on the project, Archway Projects project and engineering manager Jeff Pipe, told Mining Weekly: "People will then be taken through the actual mining procedures, and get to see how ore gets processed and then how it becomes jewellery."

He added: “We recently established that a theme park dedicated to nickel-mining exists in Canada and, with the assistance of the North West government, we are bringing the designers in as consultants on this project."

The theme park will also include a look at the past, present and future of the South African mining industry and will have a special section devoted to those who have died to make mining in the country a success.
