Platinum-chromium stent shows 'positive' long-term benefits 9th November 2011
Boston Scientific Corporation has reported "positive" long-term data from the Perseus clinical programme, which examined the Ion (Taxus Element) Paclitaxel-Eluting Platinum Chromium Stent System.
Researchers compared the stent to previous generation versions, noting that it demonstrated "favourable" safety and effectiveness outcomes.
"The Perseus trials build on the extensive Taxus clinical programme and extend the consistent outcomes seen with prior-generation paclitaxel stents to the platinum-chromium Ion Stent platform," said Dr Louis Cannon, of the Cardiac and Vascular Research Center of Northern Michigan in Petoskey.
Results, he added, confirm the Ion Stent's safety and efficacy in workhorse lesions and suggest it delivers superior performance relative to bare-metal stents in small vessels.
"In addition, I have found the new alloy and stent design to offer increased flexibility, visibility and deliverability," Dr Cannon added.
The Ion Stent System features an innovative platinum-chromium alloy, described by the US Department of Energy as being able to solve "many of the past problems surrounding traditional stents".
It received US Food and Drug Administration approval in April 2011.
