Platinum catalysts help keep people warm 3rd November 2006

A new gadget has been developed by Butterfly which uses platinum catalysis to help keep people warm.

Butterfly's Personal Heater is no bigger than a lighter, but this environmentally-friendly, portable gadget has been designed so that it heats up safely and provides a source of warmth for the user.

Platinum catalysts are used in the personal heater's glass fiber to help create a reaction between evaporated lighter fluid and oxygen. This process creates heat and warms up the heater, meaning that it can provide portable warmth at any time.

It produces a warm heat, but the process does not produce any flame or harmful emissions. It is also highly economical, reports the Gadget Blog, with less than one ounce of typical cigarette lighter fuel lasting up to 24 hours.
