Platinum catalysts cut firm's fuel bill by 40% 4th December 2007
A US quarrying company is set for a dramatic reduction in its fuel bill this year after retrofitting platinum catalysts to its vehicles.
Carver Sand and Gravel found that by fitting the Combustion Catalysts System (CCS) from Phoenix-based Emissions Technology not only did the catalyst cut emissions it also cut fuel consumption to such an extent that the firm stands to save $40,000 from its bill for diesel this year.
The CCS is fitted under the bonnet of the vehicles and works on the same principle as fitting a catalytic converter but installing it at the front end of the combustion cycle instead of on the exhaust.
So far, Carver has fitted the devices to three vehicles: a diesel generator set, a 450 horsepower loader and a diesel-driven 550 horsepower generator, with subsequent cuts in fuel consumption of 22 per cent, 17 per cent and 30 per cent noted respectively within weeks of being equipped with a CCS.
Blake Sowards, Quarry Superintendent for Carver, said: "The two things we noticed right after the installation were that the engines were putting out less black smoke, and there was a noticeable increase in power while the engines were loaded. The fuel savings came a few hundred hours later, which completely blew us away."
