Platinum-based pre-combustion marine engine system ready for launch 23rd June 2010
A pre-combustion system which makes use of platinum is ready to be rolled out to manufacturers of large diesel engines in the marine industry, it has been confirmed.
The technology, which was designed by EcoEmissions Systems, involves injecting a platinum-based catalyst nano-solution into the engine cylinders.
As a result, diesel fuel is burnt in a more complete fashion, while other improvements such as more power, lower fuel consumption, reduced pollution and longer engine life are also achieved.
According to the company, the catalyst - which is topped up every 500 hours depending on its size - will allow diesel costs to be slashed by between eight and 12 per cent.
The technology also cuts particulate matter emissions by 30 to 40 per cent, with hydrocarbon and nitrous oxide emissions falling by at least 25 per cent.
EcoEmissions Solutions is now ready to take the development to the global marine and other large diesel markets after acquiring EcoEmissions Systems.
The firm believes that one sea-going tug could save over $100,000 per year in fuel costs by making use of the 'Catalyst Inject System'.
Platinum has been crucial to catalysis reactions since the early 1800s, when researchers used a powder form to catalyse the ignition of hydrogen.
