PGM catalyst making fuel savings 4th January 2007
A device which uses a catalyst containing platinum group metals (pgms) is helping business to boom in the US as fuel economy becomes increasingly important.
Emissions Technology has found a successful product in the development of its combustion catalyst system, as it uses a liquid catalyst containing platinum, rhodium and rhenium in the form of a vapour, reports the Arizona Republic newspaper.
The mist is injected into the incoming air stream in the engine and arrives in the combustion chamber, where it enables the hydrocarbons to burn more efficiently, reducing fuel consumption and emissions.
This technology is becoming increasingly important in the US, as strict emissions targets in states such as California mean that long-distance lorry drivers in particular find the devices vital to ensure they do not incur penalties.
Debra Johnson, President of the product's distributor, Emissions Products International, told the newspaper that business "is booming" thanks to the demand for clean fuel and lower fuel consumption as oil prices remain high.
A wide variety of clients use the product, she explained, from truck drivers to waste grinders, due to the reduction in fuel consumption it can bring.
