Peugeot plans diesel hybrids 6th January 2006
Carmaker Peugeot has announced that it is to unveil two diesel-based hybrid vehicles which it aims to have on the market by the end of the decade.
The company has revealed the development of hybrid versions of its Peugeot 307 and Citroen C4 models, prototypes of which will be unveiled to the press at the end of the month.
Peugeot claims that the hybrid will be commercially available by 2010 and the company is currently collaborating with the French government to help develop commercially-viable hybrid vehicles that are available to the mass market.
The announcement from the French automaker follows French president Jacques Chirac's challenge to manufacturers to develop hybrid vehicles by the end of the decade.
Toyota, which boasts the hugely successful Prius hybrid among its ranks, is also understood to be helping Peugeot in its efforts to develop hybrid technology, as the Japanese manufacturer has previously stated it has no intention of marketing its own hybrid vehicles in Europe.
