Penumbra unveils platinum coil for treating aneurysms 4th April 2011

Penumbra Inc announced the US launch of a stretch-resistant, platinum embolic coil that has a 400 per cent volume filling advantage compared to conventional size ten coils.

The Penumbra Coil 400 System includes the Curve coil, which, due to its larger diameter, is one of the softest embolic coils on the market for finishing aneurysms.

It is a platinum embolic device placed into an aneurysm through the blood vessels leading to the brain, protecting the aneurysm from rupture.

A combination of large volume and a wide softness range enables surgeons to occlude aneurysms faster, more densely, and with fewer coils than before, the firm said.

The coil has been trialled at a number of medical facilities across the US and has been met with approval from physicians.

Patrick Han, co-medical director of the St John Stroke Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, said he was "impressed with the procedural efficiency" of the Penumbra coil.

"We turned our room faster, required less anesthesia time for the patient while achieving great clinical results. Using fewer coils per case is going to be important to the way we run our lab," he added.

Christopher Moran, professor of radiology and neurological surgery at the Washington University Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology in St Louis, Missouri, said the coils produced an "exceptional angiographic result right down to the neck".

Meanwhile, Don Heck, director of interventional neuroradiology at Forsyth Stroke and Neurosciences Center in Winston Salem, North Carolina, suggested the coil has the potential to achieve higher packing density than other coils currently available.

The Penumbra device means fewer coils have to be used, particularly in large aneurysms, he added.

"For aneurysms where coiling is deemed the best treatment, this may have the added benefit of shorter procedure time and reduced fluoroscopy time, both of which enhance the safety of endovascular procedures," he explained.

Don Frei, director of neurointerventional surgery, radiology imaging at the Associates/Swedish Medical Center in Denver, Colorado, was impressed with the PX400 Microcatheter, which is used to deliver the coil to the aneurysm.

"This product will make a big difference in the treatment of most aneurysms," he said.
