Pay talks continue at Northam Platinum 29th September 2011
Negotiations between mine owners and workers at Northam Platinum will enter a fourth round, trade union Solidarity has said.
In a statement released yesterday (September 28th), it said the third round of pay talks that took place on Tuesday failed to result in a deal. The National Union of Mineworkers is also involved in the discussions.
Northam made a two-year wage offer for an increase of 5.9 per cent during those negotiations.
Louis Pretorius, Solidarity spokesperson, explained that the trade union requested the employer to review its wage offer, describing it as "barely in step with inflation".
He noted that this year's average wage increase figure in all industries is 7.5 per cent, adding that Solidarity has been able to secure an average increase of 7.7 per cent in the mining industry.
During the previous, second round of negotiations, Northam made a wage offer of 4.6 per cent.
The fourth round of negotiations will take place on October 12th and 13th, with Solidarity saying it expects the firm "to make an improved wage offer during that round".
It comes after Anglo American Platinum agreed a wage increase for workers worth between 8.5 per cent and ten per cent.
