Pallinghurst Resources could begin platinum production in South Africa next year, according to the company's Chairman.

Brian Gilbertson revealed that the investment firm may start platinum production in 2009.

Speaking to reports, Mr Gilbertson said: "The availability of new platinum production will fall substantially short of forecasts you see at the moment."

The listing made its debut on the JSE yesterday and the firm revealed that it believes platinum to be a key growth area.

"World demand for platinum group metals (PGMs) underpins the company's PGM strategy. Pallinghurst has secured two prospective investments in the South African PGM industry in a strategic partnership with the Bakgatla-Ba-Kgafela nation," a statement explained.

Mr Gilbertson said that investors would now be able to purchase shares in the company's platinum exploration projects on the western limb of the Bushveld complex.

South Africa has about three-quarters of the world's platinum reserves making it a favourite with mining firms.
