Oral presentation confirmed for platinum-based cancer treatment 11th May 2010
An innovative form of platinum-based oncology therapy has been accepted for oral presentation, it has been confirmed.
Poniard Pharmaceuticals has been conducting a range of tests to determine the efficacy and safety of picoplatin as a second-line treatment in small cell lung cancer (SCLC).
The company has now confirmed that data from the Phase 3 SPEAR (Study of Picoplatin Efficacy After Relapse) trial will be presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) 2010 Annual Meeting.
"We believe the SPEAR trial, one of the largest second-line SCLC trials conducted in the world, provides valuable clinical insights that can be used to further the study of treatments for small cell lung cancer," said Poniard Chief Executive Ronald A Martell.
"The SPEAR data adds to the growing body of clinical evidence that we believe supports the value proposition of picoplatin as an attractive, late-stage, highly versatile anti-cancer compound that has demonstrated efficacy and safety in a variety of solid tumour types."
In addition, the SPEAR information has been selected as one of the 'Best of ASCO 2010' abstracts and will be featured at events in San Francisco and Boston in July.
The oral presentation will be conducted by Dr Tudor-Eliade Ciuleanu at 15:30 local time on 5th June in E Hall D1 at the McCormick Place Convention Center.
Picoplatin is a cytotoxic platinum compound and experts believe it could also be used to treat metastatic colorectal cancer.
