Nuvera and Fiat to develop new fuel cell powertrain 2nd December 2005

Nuvera Fuel Cells, Fiat Powertrain Technologies and Centro Ricerche Fiat have signed an agreement to research and develop a new fuel cell powertrain.

The companies will develop a high-efficiency hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system to be used in Fiat's vehicles.

It will use the Nuvera Andromeda II stack along with technologies previously developed by Fiat, such as the control system.

The air system has been designed with the specific stack in mind and its manufacturers claim this makes it highly-efficient and cost-effective, as it can operate at low pressure and does not need external humidification.

They hope that the resulting powertrain system will enable carmakers to develop a viable fuel cell vehicle in the near future.

A recent International Energy Agency report predicted that, if fully supported and developed, hydrogen fuel cells could be in 30 per cent of the world's vehicles by 2050.
