Anglo Platinum has claimed that the strike action carried out by the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) has not affected its production levels.

The strike at its Rustenburg smelter and precious metal base refineries was launched by NUMSA on Monday, with the union claiming that Anglo Platinum had reneged on a wage deal that had been agreed with the help of mediators.

However, according to Mining Weekly, Anglo Platinum spokesman Simon Tebele told Reuters that the industrial action had had no impact on production levels at its Rustenburg operations and he added that the company is hopeful of concluding a wage deal with NUMSA in the near future.

Mr Tebele stated that other employees remained at work at the Rustenburg facility following the walkout by around 1,500 NUMSA members.
