NUM to ramp-up strike action? 13th November 2007

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has mooted intensifying ongoing strike action - in a development that could impact on production for platinum miners.

Mine construction contract workers affiliated to JIC Mining called the strike on Sunday in protest over how negotiations over pay increases and working conditions were enacted.

Now NUM Regional Secretary Desmond Mfulwane has threatened to involve other unions if the situation does not improve, business.iafrica.com reports.

So far production at operations run by Anglo Platinum and Impala Platinum has been unaffected by the industrial action, but could be harmed in the event of an extended strike.

The Congress of SA Trade Unions has declared its "total support" for the JIC Mining employees' action, which went ahead after a court ruled that a dispute non-resolution granted months ago by the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) was valid.
