Anglo Platinum received a boost yesterday (26th August) after South Africa's biggest mining union confirmed that most of its members will accept the company's pay deal.

The world's largest platinum producer was sweating on the outcome of its latest wage increase offer, particularly with Impala Platinum workers going on strike this week.

However, Oupa Komane, Deputy General Secretary of the National Union of Mineworkers, revealed that the majority of Anglo workers are happy with the new terms.

He told Reuters: "I think about 70 per cent of the 30,000 members we have at Anglo Platinum are likely to accept the company's wage offer."

Impala Platinum workers decided to down tools on Monday evening after failing to reach agreement with the company over a proposed ten per cent pay rise.

However, Mr Komane added that he does not expect the problems being experienced by the world's second-largest platinum producer to have an impact on Anglo employees.

"I'm confident we have negotiated a good deal for our members and I don't think the strike at Implats will influence the situation at Anglo Platinum, given the fundamental difference in the pay structure of the companies," he added.

Anglo workers are expected to make their final decision today, according to the news provider.
