No challenge to South African mining charter 21st May 2004

The South African government has received no legal challenges to its new mining charter, according to reports.

The proposals have attracted some controversy over whether they conflict with existing bilateral expropriation treaties.

Previous reports suggested that a number of mining firms were planning to take legal action.

However, Jacinto Rocha, chief director of Mineral Resources Management, told the Reuters news agency today: "We have not been given notice that anyone wants to challenge this. "

"If the citizens feel aggrieved, they must approach their government first… We have not been informed by any other government with whom we have a bilateral agreement that we have violated these treaties."

The new mining charter will require operators to meet a range of criteria including minimum black empowerment standards.

South Africa is the world's largest platinum supplier.
