NJ approves diesel scheme 9th November 2005

The New Jersey electorate has approved a ballot to provide money for a programme which aims to reduce diesel vehicle emissions.

The scheme will divert $150 million over the next ten years from a fund for decontaminating polluted land to a programme dedicated to cutting diesel emissions.

Soot reducing filters will be placed on public buses and rubbish trucks in an attempt to tackle the pollution problem afflicting New Jersey.

School buses will also be provided with new technology that will prevent diesel fumes from entering the passenger area.

Environmental groups welcomed the news, which it is hoped will reduce diesel emissions by 500 tonnes a year.

Privately owned diesel trucks make up 82 per cent of trucks on the road.
