New strike hits Lonmin 10th September 2007

Platinum mining firm Lonmin is facing a further strike at its Brits operations, it has been reported.

According to Platts, a wildcat strike was started last week by over 350 workers employed by contractors, Shaft Sinkers, as part of an ongoing dispute over pay and conditions.

In a statement issued by Lonmin, it said that the industrial action began on September 5th and is because the workers were unhappy at Lonmin's decision to impose the 'No work, no pay' rule during the August strike by Lonmin employees.

"They are also apparently dissatisfied with the current shift system in place at the Hossy Shaft," the statement added.

Lonmin said it was on Friday seeking an urgent interim interdict from the Labour Court against the employees who have downed tools.

Commenting on the situation, Herbert Mayeza, the deputy chairman for the Rustenburg region of South Africa's National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), told Platts: "Our members are in the minority in the strike, there are only about 28 of them, so they cannot go back to work for fear of intimidation. Most of the strikers are non-union labour."
