A vehicle designed by Ford has broken the record for the fastest fuel cell race car in the world.

Representing another important milestone in the development of fuel cell vehicles, the Ford Fusion Hydrogen 999 has become one of only a small group of vehicles to surpass the 200mph mark.

The car managed a top speed of 207.297 at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah this week.

Matt Zuehlk, the project's lead engineer, welcomed the achievement, saying: "What we've accomplished is nothing short of an industry first."

He added: "No other automaker in the world has come close."

Mr Zuehlk also explained that Ford is now planning to invest more time, energy and money into the development of fuel cell vehicles in an effort to become a more eco-friendly manufacturer.

Ford's position in the marketplace has suffered in recent years as consumers move away from its traditional gas-guzzling vehicles in favour of more environmentally-friendly options.
