New platinum PED used to treat aneurysm 25th May 2011
Three aneurysm procedures using a Pipeline Embolization Device, or PED, made from platinum, cobalt and chromium have been successfully performed by doctors at St Luke's Episcopal Hospital in Houston, Texas.
It is the first time in the Gulf Coast Region of the US that a device of this type has been used.
Described as a "breakthrough" in brain aneurysm treatment, the PED has recently been given FDA approval.
The device is similar to a stent, and reconstructs the entire length of the parent vessel across the aneurysm.
Its structure is made of cobalt, chromium and platinum and the thinness of the device allows for telescoping - a technique where several PEDs are placed within each other to lower the risk of narrowing the artery.
"We're extremely pleased to offer this ground-breaking technology to treat complex aneurysms," said Dr Michel Mawad, who performed the operation.
"The PED is a valuable alternative to current endovascular or surgical treatment options for these types of aneurysms and will help save many lives."
