New hydrogen storage system developed for fuel cells 21st November 2006
A new way of storing hydrogen which will make them more efficient and more effective may have been developed.
Inergy Automotive Systems has revealed that it is designing a "totally unique" hydrogen storage system which could help in the development of mobile fuel cells, such as those used in vehicles.
The fuel cell systems company claims the storage tanks will be more space efficient, meaning that, when used in fuel cells powering vehicles, they will be able to go much further before needing refuelling.
The new storage system uses a conformable microstructure to contain pure hydrogen and the very even loading should also boost the strength of the microstructure material, according to Inergy.
Inergy's development comes as part of its efforts to improve fuel cell storage and distribution systems for fuel cell vehicles, in a project with DaimlerChrysler.
