Nanoscale 'egg' to deliver platinum 23rd January 2007

Researchers have developed a nanoscale 'egg' that will be able to deliver platinum direct to the source of cancers, it has been reported.

The new technology will enable platinum - known for its ability to tackle cancer - to be delivered safely to the source of cancer cells to help destroy them.

The American Chemical Society has published the research, carried out at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, which could provide a way to effectively tackle cancerous cells in the body.

The egg has a hard cobalt shell, surrounding a platinum and iron mixture which forms the yolk of the egg.

According to the experts, studies carried out using the egg have shown positive results, proving to be seven times more toxic to cancerous cells than anticancer agent cisplatin.
