Mvela looking to expand platinum resources 29th November 2004
A leading South Africa Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) vehicle is planning to ramp up its platinum resources holdings.
Mvelaphanda Resources (Mvela) is aiming to raise its profile in the industry and says it will work with Northam Platinum to achieve that aim.
Chief executive Nthobi Angel told Mining Weekly that Mvela saw Northam, in which it has a 22 per cent stake, as the ideal catalyst for future growth.
Mr Angel outlined three new projects that the firm was eyeing up in conjunction with Northam, potentially opening up as much as 65 million ounces of pgms.
The sites under consideration include the Booysendal joint venture with Anglo Platinum on the Bushveld Igneous Complex, in which Mvela has the option to take up a 50 per cent share.
Other possible targets include the Pandora joint venture in conjunction with Angloplat and Lonmin, and also the Dwaalkop joint venture in Limpopo.
