Mining production interrupted at Platmin mine 13th August 2009
Platinum production at Platmin's Pilanesberg Platinum Mine in South Africa has been impeded by a staffing dispute.
The situation was sparked by the decision of 500 employees of MCC Contracts, the company used by Platmin to oversee its open-cast mining activities at the Pilanesberg Platinum Mine, to go on strike.
According to a statement released by Platmin, the action taken by the workers was illegal under South African law and the workers were therefore sacked when they refused to return to work.
The mining company said it was "working with MCC and the relevant parties to resolve the situation", and that mining activities would be resumed as soon as possible.
Located in South Africa's North West Province, the Pilanesberg Platinum Mine is on the Western Limb of the Bushveld Complex.
The total project area is 14,511 hectares and encompasses mineral resources on the Tuschenkomst, Ruighoek, Witkleifontein and Rooderand properties and mineral reserves on the Tuschenkomst and Ruighoek properties.
