Lonmin in talks with suitor 20th February 2006

Lonmin has confirmed that it has entered discussions concerning a potential offer for the firm.

The miner, the world's fourth largest platinum firm, announced that it had been in tentative talks, but stressed that no firm decisions had been taken or commitments made.

After share prices across the pgm sector soared on Friday – with Aquarius Platinum rising by 11 per cent and both Implats and Angloplat seeing large rises on the Johannesburg exchange – Lonmin issued a statement.

"Lonmin notes the recent rise in its share price and is announcing that it has had preliminary discussions which may or may not lead to an offer for the company," the firm said.

"It is stressed that these discussions are at a very preliminary stage and there is no certainty that any offer will be forthcoming. A further announcement will be made if and when appropriate."

The news has prompted a rash of speculation over the potential suitors for the company, but concrete details are yet to emerge.
