London to commission hydrogen vehicles 4th August 2006
The London Hydrogen Partnership (LHP) has announced that it has now opened tender for suppliers of vehicles running on hydrogen.
Mayor of the capital Ken Livingstone announced his intention to get around 70 more fuel cell and hydrogen-powered vehicles on the streets of London by 2010.
The launch of the bid process details the 60 cars, motorbikes and vans Transport for London (TfL) is looking to purchase.
It marks a significant step in the mayor's environmentally-friendly public sector fleet plans, which it is hoped will keep the city in line with advancing and maturing transport technology.
As the fleet expands, it is proposed that facilities for the maintenance and refuelling of such vehicles will be constructed within London.
Hydrogen-powered fuel cell cars use a pgm catalyst to aid the reaction between the hydrogen fuel and oxygen that produces power.
Water is the only by-product of the reaction, meaning it is free of harmful emissions.
