Leading companies to share fuel cell and clean-tech innovations 13th December 2007

Several major industrial groups have this week formally confirmed an agreement to collaborate to improve energy efficiency and cut emissions under the Total Energy Management scheme.

The project will see Tata, Gazprom, Shell, Pacific Gas & Electric, Norway's DNV & Yara, the Norwegian Shipowners' Association, The World Trade Association and commercial shipping operator Wilh Wilhelmsen work together to share innovations in fuel cells and other clean technology applications, the Times reports.

The scheme marks something of a sea change in attitudes for industry, which has often been seen as one of the chief causes of environmental damage with companies deemed to safeguard their innovations for personal gain, according to Ingar Skaug, group chief executive of Wilh Wilhelmsen.

Mr Skaug said this has come about because firms have realised "the scale of the energy challenge" as well as the cost savings to be made by sharing technology.

He said: "There will be far greater savings if we collaborate - from initial supplier to end customer - rather than by pursuing partial steps. Failure to agree a joined-up solution will only delay new technologies."
