LCD sales boost Sharp's outlook 12th January 2006

Electronics manufacturer Sharp has forecast record levels of sales over the coming 12 months, thanks in part to the growing demand for LCD screens.

Revealing plans to increase its output of LCD panels in the months ahead, Sharp projects that its overall sales will rise by ten per cent by March 2007, lifting it to a record £14.9 billion, with the television market playing a large part in that growth.

LCD sales have jumped over the past year as demand for flat-screen televisions has surged, thanks to the falling cost to consumers of the goods.

Sharp is the latest in a string of electronics companies that have revealed plans to up their LCD output in 2006, following similar announcements from LG Electronics and Samsung, among others.

In an effort to keep up with their rivals, Sharp is to increase its output to 30,000 televisions by March of next year and could push that figure up to 90,000 by March 2008.

The company stated it will spend £956 million in its efforts to achieve this level of production and keep up with demand.
