A commemorative hallmark to pay homage to the diamond jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, which can be struck on gold, silver, platinum or palladium, will be made available in July 2011.

The optional hallmark will be available from all four UK assay offices and presents a picture of the young Queen in an oversized crown, bordered by a diamond shape.

"The jubilee coincides with the London Olympics and the two occasions combined make 2012 an unprecedented year of opportunity for the UK jewellery and giftware industry," said the Birmingham Assay Office.

Following the official launch on July 1st, the mark will be in use until October 2012. Date letters will be maintained as usual, but trade letters bearing the letter 'n' with the Jubilee hallmark will be permissible from July.

Once a month until June this year, the Birmingham Assay Office will host a series of hallmarking seminars, which will provide an overview of the UK jewellery trade as well as a hands-on hallmarking session.
