JSE 'could get platinum ETF' 23rd May 2007
It has been claimed that the JSE could be the next to see a platinum exchange-traded fund (ETF) floated on it.
Mining Weekly has reported that Noah Greenhill, Marketing Director at the JSE, has suggested an ETF could be floated on the JSE in the near future.
Despite objections from the platinum mining industry, concerned that the establishment of ETFs will significantly constrict supply and put more pressure on production, Mr Greenhill said an ETF is "highly likely", adding: "It should work very well."
Mr Greenhill is hopeful that the platinum ETF on the JSE could prove as successful as recently launched funds in Europe, such as the one launched by ETF Securities on April 24th.
Platinum mining giants Impala Platinum and Anglo Platinum have both registered concern about the launch of platinum ETFs, warning that they could cause demand to outstrip supply and force up platinum prices even further.
