Johnson Matthey presents new retrofit emissions technology for trucks 17th September 2008
Johnson Matthey unveiled its new SCRT (R) diesel retrofit technology at an annual conference in California yesterday (September 16th).
The company announced that it has fitted 16 older, Class Eight trucks with the four-way control system, which is designed to offer cleaner emissions than most modern diesel trucks.
The SCRT (R) combines the company's patented two-stage CRT (R) particulate system - which reduces particulate matter by over 85 per cent - with a selective reduction catalyst that decreases NOx emissions by 60 to 80 per cent.
Speaking at the "Future is Green" conference, Marty Lassen, Johnson Matthey's Director of Commercial Development and Marketing, said: "Johnson Matthey is extremely pleased with the real-world results that the SCRT system has shown.
"This literally gives a new lease of life to many trucks that are capable of providing ongoing service, but in stock form cannot meet proposed new private fleet emissions rules.
"This will provide California and the rest of the nation another tool to help meet clean air goals."
The system is also capable of reducing carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons by more than 90 per cent, meaning any trucks fitted with it could meet existing and proposed air quality regulations until 2020.
The demonstration of the technology - which Johnson Matthey developed in partnership with Cummins Emissions Solutions - also involved a local partnership with supermarket chain Ralphs and the South Coast AQMD.
