Johnson Matthey diesel particulate filter gets US approval 7th January 2009
Johnson Matthey's latest generation diesel particulate filter has been verified by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the California Air Resources Board (CARB), it was confirmed yesterday (6th January).
The Continuously Regenerating Technology (CRT(R)) filter is produced by the platinum refiner's Emission Control Technologies department, which is the world's largest supplier of catalysts for the auto industry.
The news means that the filter - which can reduce PM, HC and CO emissions by over 85 per cent - meets the EPA and the CARB's tough NO2 slip requirement, while it is also the first to be verified by the EPA's voluntary refit programme.
Marty Lassen, Director of Commercial Development and Marketing at Johnson Matthey, said: "It is further confirmation that Johnson Matthey's technologies remain the best available choice for improving air quality.
"The CRT(R) particulate filter, which was introduced in the 1990s, was the first to be EPA/CARB verified and is also verified for use with up to B20 biodiesel blend."
The filter makes use of the company's unique soot oxidisation process in the presence of NO2, which takes place at a lower temperature than with oxygen which is also compatible with standard diesel exhaust temperatures.
As such, this means that no additional heat is required to make the process succeed, while the CRT(R) technology also allows NO2 slip to be minimised while it simultaneously remains passive.
"With over 150,000 CRT systems for retrofit worldwide and over a million first-fit, new engine CRT systems in place, Johnson Matthey technology offers maximum performance and confirmed durability," added Mr Lassen.
