PGI announces design contest in Vegas (10/05/10)

A new platinum jewellery competition took place in the US over the weekend as part of the JCK Las Vegas show.

The 'Platinum Innovation Challenge' saw designers taking part in the show enter innovative pieces for the right to win a promotion package, courtesy of organiser Platinum Guild International.

A number of categories were available, including platinum engagement rings under $2,500 retail (semi-mounts), platinum wedding bands under $1,500 retail (men's or women's) and platinum fashion jewellery under $2,500 retail (necklaces, earrings, bracelets, brooches).

Entries were also invited for platinum fashion jewellery over $2,500 retail (necklaces, earrings, bracelets, brooches) and platinum coloured gemstone jewellery under $2,500 retail (necklaces, earrings, rings, bracelets).

Sharapova bats for Tiffany & Co at Madrid Open (14/05/10)

Tennis star Maria Sharapova dazzled spectators at the recent Madrid Open by wearing platinum jewellery during the tournament.

The Russian beauty selected earrings featuring perfectly matched sapphires in a bezel setting of platinum from Tiffany & Co's Elsa Peretti Colour by the Yard collection.

Aravane Rezai and Rafael Nadal - who won the men's and women's tournaments in the Spanish capital - were also awarded trophies designed by the luxury jeweller.

Meanwhile, Hollywood stars have been showing off platinum jewellery at various red-carpet events in recent weeks.

Cate Blanchett, Helen Mirren and Kristin Scott Thomas all selected platinum pieces for their appearance at the premiere of 'Robin Hood' at the Cannes Film Festival.

Blanchett selected two platinum and diamond bracelets, while Mirren chose two platinum and diamond bracelets (116 carats and 62 carats), and a pair of platinum and diamond earrings (36 carats).

Scott-Thomas looked glamorous in a pair of platinum and diamond cluster earrings (72 carats), and a platinum and diamond bracelet (75 carats).

Belle also donned platinum jewellery for her appearance at the amfAR's Cinema Against AIDS Gala in Cannes on May 20th.
