Abigail Breslin and Dianna Agron both wore platinum and diamond earrings at major celebrity events last month. American actress and singer Agron wore designer Neil Lane's platinum and diamond drop earrings featuring a ruby stone at the Trevor Project's 2011 Trevor Live! Event in Los Angeles on December 4th.

Meanwhile, Abigail Breslin paired platinum and diamond stud earrings with a matching bangle at the Los Angeles premiere of New Year's Eve the following day. Both sets of Breslin's jewellery were designed by Kwiat.

Marilyn Monroe's Engagement Ring Set for Auction (08/12/2011)

The wedding ring given to Marylin Monroe by New York Yankees legend Joe DiMaggio was sold at a California auction in December. It had an estimated value of $300,000-$500,000 and features a platinum band with a set of 35 baguette-cut diamonds, although one stone is missing.

A pair of ruby slippers worn by Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz were also auctioned for sale at the same time on December 15th-17th in Calabasas Hills, California. The iconic shoes have an estimated value of $2-$3 million and were the last of four pairs of ruby slippers that have survived since the movie's 1939 release.

The shoes, which are also painted red on the bottom, are thought to have been used for the extra close-up shot at the end of the film, when Garland clicks her heels together, indicated by the lack of felt and light circular scuffs on the soles  of the footwear.

Rosie O'Donnell's Proposal, $100,000 Ring for Fiancee (10/12/2011)

Talk-show host Rosie O'Donnell has proposed to partner Michelle Rounds with a platinum ring with an estimated value of $100,000. The 49-year-old surprised the New York headhunter with the ring.

"Wow! This is a platinum ring that gets you noticed," O'Connor marveled. "The cushion cut center diamond is approximately 4 carats, and since it's set in platinum, the diamond will be held more securely. There may be additional significance to the fact that the center diamond is surrounded by 'rounds' set into a platinum collar."

A host of celebrities were spotted at red carpet events in Los Angeles Beverly Hills wearing platinum and diamond jewellery.

Emmy Rossum wore cluster earrings and a cocktail ring by Chophard, while Nina Dobrev wore drop earrings and a cocktail ring by Neil Lane at the Ripple Effect Charity Event on December 10th. Krysten Ritter also attended, wearing chandelier earrings and a platinum and diamond bracelet with sapphires, also by Neil Lane.

The day before, Julie Benz attended the Andrea Bocelli Foundation Launch wearing ball earrings and a cocktail ring by Neil Lane.

Platinum jewellery has been recommended as a Christmas gift by HKJewellery.co.uk senior designer Rebecca Howarth. An elegant pair of stud earrings and pendants work well with a variety of outfits, she said, noting that smaller items can be bought for a reasonable price as they do not use a lot of the precious metal.

"The nice thing about platinum is because it's quite a bright white, it does set off most colours very, very well - unlike white gold, where when the plating wears off, you've got a warm tone," she explained.

Queen celebrates year of the Royal Wedding in Christmas Day speech (24/12/2011)

The Queen wore a diamond and platinum flame lily brooch during her Christmas message, in which she looked forward to the Diamond Jubilee and celebrated the 2011 Royal Wedding.

The 85-year-old monarch, who is preparing to mark 60 years on the throne, paired the platinum brooch - a 21st birthday present from the children of Southern Rhodesia - with a strawberry red dress by in-house designer Angela Kelly.
