Men have been spotted wearing platinum jewellery beyond their wedding bands, according to Platinum Guild International.

"Since platinum is so rare it's the ultimate expression of status," confirms Eric Alulis of CliQ Jewelry.

"Unlike women, men generally accumulate fewer pieces of fine jewellery over their lifetime, so each piece of platinum jewellery is meant to celebrate a special occasion or achievement."

Palladium group sponsors Hollywood Style Awards (21/11/11)

Palladium Alliance International sponsored the 2011 Hollywood Style Awards at Smashbox Studios, giving plenty of excuses to spot celebrities in their palladium jewellery.

Host George Kotsiopoulos wore palladium, ruby and diamond cufflinks by Willow Company, while award presenter Mandy Moore chose a pair of seven-carat contemporary diamond and palladium hoops by Andrew Meyer.

Actress Selma Blair wore two palladium rings by Dennis de Jonghe, an AGTA Spectrum Awards winner.

International Jewellery Tokyo (IJT) 2012 Moved to Earlier Dates by Popular Demand from Asian Buyers (11/11/11)

Platinum Guild International will unveil a Platinum Pavilion featuring the most desirable pieces of platinum jewellery at Japan's largest jewellery trade show – International Jewellery Tokyo (IJT).

A total of 1,350 companies will be exhibiting at IJT 2012, which will be held from January 11th-14th 2012.

Actress Anne Hathaway has been showing off her platinum and diamond engagement ring from fiancé Adam Shulman.

He worked with jewellery firm Kwiat on the design of the piece, valued at $150,000.

"After all that Anne's been through in the past she knows the value of quality in everything, from her men to her engagement ring," jewellery expert Michael O'Connor told US Weekly.

"Like a fine romance, this setting will embrace the diamond forever and never fade or change colour."

Platinum Guild International (PGI) has highlighted the top global engagement and wedding ring trends, as revealed by jewellery expert Michael O’Connor.

"Stark simplicity" is one key trend, he notes in PGI's Platinum Soulmate video, citing Tiffany & Co's Bezet ring and a new piece from Mikimoto.

Another trend is "returning romance", with pieces like the Delphine platinum engagement ring embodying this trait.

LACMA's Art and Film Gala in Los Angeles on November 5th provided a chance to spot a number of celebrities wearing platinum jewellery. Actress Uma Thurman wore platinum jewellery by Chopard, while Reese Witherspoon opted for pieces created by Van Cleef & Arpels.

The Walk the Line star wore platinum and diamond Corolle earrings, platinum and diamond bracelet and a platinum bracelet with diamonds and onyx.

Meanwhile, Glamour's Women of the Year Awards in New York on November 7th saw Jennifer Lopez sparkle in platinum and diamond ear studs and cluster ring by Harry Winston.

At the same event, Jessica Alba wore platinum and diamond studs by Neil Lane, as well as a platinum ring with black and white diamonds by the same designer.

Nicole Kidman showed off a number of platinum jewellery pieces by Fred Leighton at the BMI Country Awards and the CMA Awards on November 8th and 9th in Nashville.

Dita Von Teese shimmered in platinum and ruby earrings by Bulgari at the Cinema Italian Style Awards on November 11th.

Nicole Richie chose platinum and diamond jewellery by Chopard for her appearance at the 2011 MOCA Gala on November 12th in Los Angeles, while Michelle Williams wore platinum, diamond and pearl bracelets from the 1920s by Fred Leighton at the New York premiere of My Week with Marilyn on November 13th.

Camilla Belle chose a platinum cocktail ring with rose-cut diamonds for the jewellery maker's official re-opening in South Coast Plaza in Orange County, California.

Kate Walsh wore a number of platinum pieces at GQ's Men of the Year Party on November 17th in Los Angeles.

Jennifer Lopez sparkled in platinum and diamond cocktail rings by Neil Lane while accepting her award at the 2011 American Music Awards. She wore other platinum creations by the designer at an after party to the show.

Archie Panjabi wore platinum and diamond jewellery by Chopard at 39th International Emmy Awards in New York on November 21st, while Audrina Patridge chose platinum and diamond bracelets by Kwiat for the 2011 American Music Awards in Los Angeles on November 20th.
