JAMA looks at hydrogen fuel cells 19th December 2006

The Japan Automobile Manufacturer's Association (Jama) has published its views on the European Commission's (EC) draft law addressing hydrogen-powered vehicles.

A new law is to be proposed next year by the EC, pertaining to cars and trucks which use hydrogen power, for example through fuel cells.

The law will address hydrogen for vehicles used in both liquid and compressed gas form.

Jama has worked with the commission to coordinate its manufacturing strategy and present "a set of key messages" to be considered.

In its latest newsletter Jama stated: "With hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (HFCV) technological development still at an early stage, innovation must be encouraged.

"Jama therefore urges the commission to make HFCV performance specification, rather than HFCV parts and materials specification, the target of the new law."

Based in Tokyo, Jama is a trade association representing 14 Japanese car and truck companies.

The association maintains offices in the United States, Asia and Europe.
